TMJ is in many cases a debilitating disease. Having TMJ often means that patients are living with headaches, neck and cervical pain, have difficulty with chewing, and sometimes very limited opening. In addition, many of these patients have breathing issues which they are not aware of. These factors can lead to resultant postural problems as well. Airway problems often cause bad dental bites which can cause TMJ pain and its associated problems. So what does this have to do with changing lives? A true understanding of neuromuscular dentistry principles allows neuromuscular dentistry to help free these patients from their pain. Neuromuscular TMJ treatment is not simply working with the jaw and placing a splint. The use of computer assisted assessment along with postural treatment can help these patients to live normal life. In our practice, which has special interests in TMJ treatment, we work with many patients who are now pain free and have had long term correction which helps to maintain their health. Long term correction after pain relief varies from patient to patient, however, can include bite adjustments, neuromuscular orthodontics, and/or some restorative treatment. Neuromuscular TMJ care has allowed us to change and enhance the quality of life for patients as never before.
