Can TMJ Problems Cause My Face to Change?

Many TMJ patients complain of changes in the way their faces look or that their faces are loosing facial symmetry or collapsing.  This is not imagined.  A leading cause of TMJ issues is caused by the way the teeth meet together.  If your teeth meet together incorrectly, then this stresses the muscles and jaw joints and even the neck.  If the teeth meet together and cause the jaw to shift to one side then you will see an asymmetrical face.

It is important when treating patients with TMJ to look at the face and not just the teeth!  Many cases involve realigning the facial symmetry to resolve TMJ issues.  This is just one of many factors to be considered when treating TMJ patients for pain and is a benefit of correct treatment.

Restoring symmetry not only aligns the head and neck to function better but enhances beauty!
