Houston Comprehensive Dentist Dr. Konig attended the International Academy of Comprehensive Aesthetics (IACA) in July, and was also awarded a Fellowship from this Academy. This follows passing the Fellowship Exam and attendance of IACA meetings over the past 10 years. This year’s 3-day symposium reviewed and discussed Cosmetic, TMJ, and Advanced Sleep Apnea treatments using Physiologic Dentistry. While at the conference, he met and learned from many professionals including Sung Kim who helped create a groundbreaking new sleep appliance.
Sung Kim, an engineer at Microdental who helped design and fabricate the new dental sleep appliance, the MicroO2, is thrilled as the appliance recently received FDA approval. Dr. Konig is truly excited about this appliance, and believes it will be one of the best dental sleep appliances to have ever been developed.
The appliance (pictured below) will help minimize TMJ issues, but the process begins with utilizing computerized technology in our office to obtain the best physiologic bite with airway and muscle relaxation. This is in contrast to the common procedure in which dentists are simply moving the mandible forward. Utilizing these advanced procedures is beneficial and preferred since very little titration or adjustments are needed.
It also offers the advantage of having no material on the tongue side. This keeps the appliance from further pushing the tongue back and blocking the airway. Additionally, the appliance has no wires or clasps and is CADCAM milled for strength which prevents breakage.
